A recent report published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported that 642,480 international students studied in Canada in 2019.  

Schools moving towards online classes and the Government of Canada closing its borders. The long term effects on international students have been uncertain.  

However, The Government of Canada has taken initiative to reduce the impact on international students.

On April 7, 2020, The Government of Canada announced a new update on their most rewarding program (PGWP) that will have a widespread positive impact across the world.
What is a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program in Canada?
A post-graduation work permit (PGWP) gives you the right to remain in Canada and work full time for up to three years after you graduate from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs). The length of the work permit depends on the length of your program. To obtain an open work permit to gain valuable work experience in Canada. Work through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) can also help students on their path to permanent residency. It is important to note that not all DLIs make students eligible for the PGWPP. In addition to graduating from a DLI, the student must meet all other criteria t to obtain their PGWP.
To be eligible for a PGWP, you must have below mention documents from College or University
You must have completed a program of study that lasted at least eight months and led to a degree, diploma, or certificate. 
Studied full-time in each academic session (excludes scheduled breaks), with two exceptions: 

New Updates on Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit Eligibility

On April 7, Government of Canada announced that completing the majority of a program online would not affect students post-graduation work permit eligibility:
If your classes and courses are being moved to an online-only format because of COVID-19, your eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program won’t be affected. This includes students who have a study permit or who have been approved for a study permit for a program starting in May or June but who are unable to travel to Canada at this time due to travel restrictions. International students in this situation may begin their classes while outside Canada and may complete up to 50% of their program while outside Canada if they cannot travel to Canada sooner.
