Why Canada is Refusing Indian Student Visas

 Canada was once a dream destination for Indian students, but now it feels like that is starting to change.

Canada has long been seen as a dream destination for international students, especially from India. However, things are no longer as easy as they used to be. What was once considered a highly welcoming system has now become noticeably stricter.

In late 2025 and into 2026, visa refusal rates for Indian students have increased significantly, with reports suggesting figures as high as 74–80%. Because of this sharp rise, many are describing the current situation as the toughest phase in the past decade.

At our overseas education office in Jalandhar, we are clearly seeing a big change. Earlier, most students and parents used to ask only about Canada. Now, many are looking at other countries like Germany, the UK, NZ, and Australia.

Before 2023 to 2024, Canada was the top choice for Indian students. But now, applications have dropped. Many students don’t want to apply because visa refusals have become very common.

Recent trends also show the same. The number of Indian students going to Canada has gone down sharply in the last two years.

Reason for Canada Visa Refusal

There are a few main reasons for this. Visa rules have become stricter, living costs are very high, and relations between India and Canada have not been good for some time.

Earlier, Canada was popular because the path was simple. Students could take a 2–3 year course, get a job after studying, and then apply for permanent residency. Many people saw this as a safe and clear future plan.

But now, things are different.

In 2024, Canada limited the number of study permits, especially for college and diploma students. This made it harder to get admission and visa approval.

At the same time, expenses have increased a lot. Rent is high, jobs are harder to find, and students need to show more money. The GIC amount has also increased to more than double compared to before.

Because of all this, Canada is no longer an easy option. Students are now being more careful and are choosing other countries where the chances are better.

The program that I recommend chose Master's degree and Bacholer degree. Students who get admission in master's and bachelor's programs always have a very high visa sucess ration as compare to diploma programs. The reason for that visa officers consider those students as valuable assets for their country's economy.
